California recently awarded 27 public transportation projects more than $1.3 billion in Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) grants.
Funding will support rail and transit projects that provide residents with alternatives to driving and help meet the state’s ambitious climate goals.
The funding is in addition to the nearly $4 billion in federal and state funding the California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved earlier this month. The CTC allocated funding to projects that will improve bridges, coastal rail lines, freight corridors, highway interchanges and system enhancements aimed to increase accessibility for multi-modal users.
“Under Gov. (Gavin) Newsom’s leadership, California is furthering its commitment to fund transit projects that boost the state’s zero-emissions goals,” California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin said. “This critical investment is yet another major step towards growing a more sustainable and equitable transit system for those who work, live and play in California.”
Funding is part of a multiyear, multibillion dollar investment to modernize and expand the state’s public transit and rail network. The goal is to prioritize climate action, economic prosperity, equity, and safety in the transportation decisions.
Since 2023, the state has awarded more than $4.8 billion in TIRCP grants for transit and passenger rail projects.
