The U.S. Department of Transportation recently opened the application period for the Low Carbon Transportation Materials Program.
A total of $800 million will be awarded in this round.
The program supports low-carbon materials and products in transportation that reduce air pollution, especially greenhouse gas emissions. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, $2 billion will be made available for state departments of transportation, cities, tribes, metropolitan planning organizations, and other agencies.
Funding can be used for asphalt, concrete (and cement), glass, and steel that create less pollution. It also can be used to develop specifications for low-embodied carbon materials.
Eligible construction projects including federal-aid highways, federal lands access facilities, federal lands transportation facilities, and tribal transportation facilities.
The program also provides resources on how to implement processes and coordinate with industry to quantify the emissions of construction materials.
The application deadline is Nov. 25.
“We’re aiming to provide Americans with the best transportation at less cost to the environment,” Shailen Bhatt Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) administrator, said.
FHWA anticipates at least $22 million will be made available to each state department of transportation under the program. All funds will be awarded through Sept. 30, 2026, and are available for expenditure before Sept. 30, 2031.
