The Newport News Transportation Center opened on Aug. 22.

The center serves customers traveling on Amtrak Virginia and the regional bus system. Amenities include a level-boarding platform equipped with guardrails and signs, a Passenger Information Display System communicating train status, a 3,450-square-foot waiting area, and a fully illuminated parking lot and bus area with accessible pathways.

Travelers will have access to two daily Amtrak Virginia roundtrips between Newport News and Richmond, Alexandria, Washington, D.C., and cities in the Northeast; and to Amtrak Thruway Bus Service.

Amtrak, the city of Newport News, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), CSX, and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation partnered on the project.

“This opening is a significant milestone in our efforts to improve our service, trains, stations and amenities to provide customers an exceptional experience,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said. “We are grateful for the support from CSX and our city, state and federal partners for investing in this project and maximizing opportunities to help bring improvements to advance passenger rail growth in the Hampton Roads region.”
