On Aug. 19, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced his state would invest more than $51 million to support 66 transportation projects in 32 counties across the state.

The funding, part of the Multimodal Transportation Fund, will go toward highway, bridge, aviation ports, and bike and pedestrian initiatives, officials said. The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides financial assistance to municipalities, councils of government, businesses, economic development organizations, public transportation agencies and ports and rail freight entities to improve transportation assets.

“Infrastructure is critical to our Commonwealth’s progress, and our ability to complete major projects is key to spurring economic growth and create real opportunity,” Shapiro said. “Investing in and improving our infrastructure is a commonsense way to spur economic development, create jobs, and help Pennsylvanians reach their destinations safely and efficiently. These improvements will help our communities grow as we continue working together to move Pennsylvania forward.”

The awards include more than $2.5 million to Scranton, to repair the Hollow Avenue Bridge; $591,300 to Brentwood Borough to improve pedestrian and public safety while making the Dewalt Avenue area more multimodal friendly for businesses, customers, residents and commuters; and $151,868 for Mars Borough for reconstruction and resurfacing of Spring Avenue Road.

PennDOT will begin accepting applications for the next round of funding on Sept. 23. Application are due by 4 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2024, and the winners will be announced next year.
