On Tuesday, Amtrak announced it had added 33 more weekly stops at the Newark Liberty International Airport for Northeast Regional service.
The stops better align with customer demand across the northeast Corridor (NEC), officials said, as well as airline travel schedules. With stops added throughout the morning, afternoon and evening, the additions represent a 26 percent increase in service.
“We are forecasting our airports to reach record passenger levels this summer, following a record first quarter of 2024 at Newark Liberty International Airport and across the region,” Charles R. Everett, aviation director, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said. “Amtrak’s added service will help accommodate the demand and increase transit access to the airport—a key component of Newark Airport’s transformation into a modern, world-class gateway.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Amtrak’s recent announcement to add more service throughout the NEC to meet growing customer demand. The new schedules support the company’s initiative to double annual ridership to 66 million by 2040.
“We’ve heard from our customers who asked for more and better-timed stops at Newark Airport, and are implementing these upgrades based on their feedback,” Amtrak Vice President Commercial Strategy and Performance Fred Gazzolo said. “By adding more Northeast Regional stops at Newark Airport, there’s more opportunities to experience the benefits of train travel.”
Ridership is up 20 percent above pre-pandemic levels, officials said, and Northeast Regional ridership has grown more than 33 percent compared to 2019.
