On Monday, Lifoam Industries, LLC, based in Greer, S.C. announced it had won the GreenBiz Circularity Conference’s Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award for compostability.
Lifoam, a subsidiary of LifeMade Products LLC, won the 2024 US Plastics Pact Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award in compostability for its Bioffex technology. The technology represents a departure from traditional foams, company officials said, and utilizes a PLA-based bead foam which eliminates reliance on petroleum-based feedstocks associated with expanded polystyrene.
“We’re absolutely thrilled and deeply honored to receive the prestigious 2024 US Plastics Pact Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award in the Compostability category. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of each individual at LifeMade and our parent company, Jadex,” Brian Searfoss, President and CEO of LifeMade Products, said. “Winning this award validates our commitment to making a tangible impact on the environment through our Bioffex innovation. We are grateful to the USPP for acknowledging our efforts, and we are more determined than ever to continue our journey towards a more sustainable and circular future.”
Bioffex has a 100 percent bio-based composition and has been accepted by the USDA’s BioPreferred program, distinguishing it as a fully bio-based foam alternatives. Additionally, Bioffex technology is less water and greenhouse gas-intensive compared to traditional EPS, and is superior in end-of-life characteristics. Commercial composting of products made with Bioffex takes under four weeks, company officials said, outperforming EPS in landfill scenarios with a better carbon profile.
The award demonstrates the companies’ commitment to sustainable packaging innovation, company officials said.
In accepting this award, Lifoam reaffirms its commitment to pioneering sustainable packaging solutions that transcend industry norms and contribute to a better future.
“The material thought leaders behind Jadex and its operating companies are taking actions every day to become a more sustainable organization,” Mario D’Ovidio, CEO of Jadex, said. “We at Jadex are constantly innovating ways to reduce plastic pollution to ensure we leave behind a better world for the generations to come. Bioffex technology is prime example of this and we are proud to receive this award.”
