American Packaging Corporation (APC) announced on Monday it had launched another “Design for Recycle” flexible packaging technology – this time targeted at pet food products.

The new technology aimed at pet food products from small pouches for pet treats to large bags will join the company’s APC RE sustainable packaging portfolio that includes designs for compost, circular content and renewable content, as well as several film and paper options.

“APC is committed to developing high-performance, sustainable packaging. Our RE Sustainable Packaging portfolio continues to expand with sustainable options for a wide variety of applications. For most products, we have one or more sustainable package options for our customers to consider for their brands, including Circular Content, Renewable Content, Design for Compost and Design for Recycle,” Ray Graham, president of APC, said.

The company said conventional offerings on the market tend to include multi-material laminates that could not be reused or recycled. The goal, official said, was to develop packaging that was compliant with industry guidelines for recyclability and could be recycled wherever collection and sorting facilities were. Transition from laminates to PE-based material compatible with recycling required the company use new material offerings and process technologies, the company said.

According to recent market studies, pet owners are increasingly focused on sustainable pet ownership,” Jeff Travis, manager of innovation and sustainability, said. “Having options for sustainable and potentially recyclable packaging is necessary and APC has a variety of market-ready solutions.”
