The Automotive Service Association’s (ASA) Collision Operations Committee released a statement on April 17 supporting pre- and post-repair vehicle scanning as a normal part of the repair process after exploring and evaluating the debated discussion.

“The Automotive Service Association supports the electronic scanning of all vehicles prior to and after collision repairs are completed in order to ensure that all potential damage has been identified to achieve a safe and complete repair,” the statement said. “ASA will maintain this position until such time as the vehicle manufacturers identify the specific years, makes, models and scenarios where such scanning is not necessary.”

ASA President and Executive Director Dan Risley said that the association also supports full disclosure of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) identified by the scans, which includes acquiring a customer’s written acknowledgement to the DTCs found. Documentation of other vehicle issues not related to the accident in question will also be presented to the customer when a DTC is present, Risley said.
