Amtrak recently awarded Herzog Contracting Corp. a construction contract to design and construct a new heavy maintenance facility at Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia.
Once completed, the facility will service many of the Acela and Northeast Regional trains that operate on the Northeast Corridor (NEC).
“We look forward to breaking ground in 2024 on this critical infrastructure investment along the NEC, America’s busiest passenger corridor,” Laura Mason, Amtrak executive vice president of capital delivery, said. “This new facility will speed up train maintenance and reduce turnaround times, providing Amtrak customers with more reliable and frequent service.”
The contract is first of six for the maintenance facilities nationwide. Additional contracts will be awarded over the next year for similar facility upgrades in Boston, New York City, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
The projects, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, are part of Amtrak’s plan to invest approximately $5.5 billion during fiscal year 2024. Investments will enhance stations, modernize trains, and upgrade critical infrastructure.
Other Amtrak projects underway include several layover facilities outside the NEC, located along existing routes, that will be built or renovated.
Six rail yards will receive new facilities to support cleaning needs, equipment repairs and minor service, maintenance activities, and routine inspections.
