The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recently received environmental approval for the I-10 project near Wild Horse Pass within the Gila River Indian Community.
The agency will make the final environmental assessment and the final design concept report available to the public for 30 days, probably in April. The final documents were prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and include comments made during
four public hearings held in 2022.
The project will improve a nearly 12-mile section from Loop 202 to just north of the Gila River Bridges.
Work includes widening 13 miles of roadway from south of the bridges to State Route 387, the removal and replacement of bridges over the Gila River, extending the High Occupancy Vehicle lane from Loop 202 to Riggs Road, adding a new general purpose lane in both eastbound and westbound directions, improving interchanges and crossroads to increase capacity and access, and the installation of fiber optic infrastructure within the ADOT right of way to allow for the installation of sensors, cameras and other highway safety-related technology.
The project has received federal and state funding, including more than $220 million in funding through Proposition 400, a half-cent sales tax for transportation funded by Maricopa County voters.
