The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), a nonprofit research organization studying freight transportation, recently released its 13th annual Top Truck Bottleneck List.
The list measures truck congestion at more than 325 locations on the national highway system. Freight truck GPS data is analyzed to discover the congestion impact ranking of each location. The list details the top 100 congested locations.
The intersection of I-95 and SR 4 in Fort Lee, N.J., is the top freight bottleneck for the sixth consecutive year. The other top bottlenecks are I-294 at I-290/I-88 in Chicago, I-55 in Chicago, I-45 at I-69/US 59 in Houston, I-285 at I-85 North in Atlanta, I-20 at I-285 West in Atlanta, SR 60 at SR 57 in Los Angeles, I-10 at I-45 in Houston, I-285 at SR 400 in Atlanta, and I-24/I-40 at I-440 East in Nashville.
Average rush hour truck speeds were 28.5 miles per hour in the top 10 locations compared to 34.4 miles per hour nationally, nearly 4 percent lower than 2023.
“The freight bottlenecks identified in this report provide an actionable blueprint for state and federal transportation officials on where to invest infrastructure funding most cost-effectively,” Chris Spear, American Trucking Association president and CEO, said.
Some traffic conditions were attributed to work zones.
