Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will repair or replace dozens of existing electric vehicle (EV) charging sites using a $5 million federal investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s EV Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator Program.

PennDOT plans to allocate through a program that will be administered similarly to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. The agency will develop the funding opportunity and announce it in the coming months. A 20 percent match will be required.

The agency will run a competitive program to select chargers and sites. There are 293 eligible, privately owned, charging ports at 174 locations statewide. PennDOT anticipates 20 to 50 sites will receive an award.

“Thanks to Gov. (Josh) Shapiro’s leadership, we are now among the nation’s leaders in rapidly implementing federal EV investments and are pleased to be a part of this new program,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “The Shapiro Administration remains focused on improving our current transportation system while meeting Pennsylvanians’ growing demands for EV-charging options.”

PennDOT created a web page to detail federal grant opportunities to help municipalities, townships, and other community agencies understand the available transportation program grants. Information includes guides and links to resources for those interested in pursuing federal funding opportunities.
