The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) in conjunction with the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Intermodal Transportation (GACIT), held 24 public hearings statewide in September and October.

GACIT incorporated the public comments into the state’s Ten-Year Plan, a draft of which was
submitted to Gov. Chris Sununu for review. NHDOT reviews New Hampshire’s transportation needs every two years and develops a plan that utilizes funding to maintain and improve the system.

Sununu submitted the plan to the legislature for review, discussion, and adoption. Final adoption is anticipated in June.

The draft advances engineering efforts for the New Castle NH 1B Causeway, adjusts turnpike funding for the I-293 Exit 6 and 7 projects, identifies specific corridors NHDOT will study to manage more proactively, and fully funds 32 new congestion mitigation projects for multimodal and electric vehicle charging systems.

During the public hearings, residents expressed a need for more support for community transportation/transit opportunities. Changes incorporated into the plan based on the feedback include funding to complete several rail trail projects that were currently underfunded, additional support to regional mobility management and services, additional funding for transit capital projects/bus purchases, and Statewide Transportation Demand Management.

GACIT is comprised of the five executive councilors and NHDOT’s commissioner.
