The Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently graduated 109 cadets at a ceremony in New Jersey.
This is the police force’s 122nd class.
“These new officers are joining the Port Authority Police Department at a critical time as more security threats emerge both overseas and closer to home, as well as through technology in the form of increasingly advanced cyber threats,” Port Authority Chief Security Officer Greg Ehrie said. “They will add to our enhanced security posture to help ensure the public can continue to use our transportation facilities as intended.”
The class brings the total PAPD workforce to more than 2,000 members. A total of 46 percent of the recruits are from New York and 54 percent are from New Jersey.
The PAPD Academy requires 26 weeks of training and study in police procedures, first aid, counterterrorism techniques, firearms usage, and New York and New Jersey laws. Eleven percent of the new recruits have military experience and more than 41 percent have prior law enforcement experience.
The port authority’s 2024 budget includes nearly $1 billion for safety and security.
The PAPD is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the agency’s facilities.
