The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) recently released guidance on automated traffic enforcement safety devices for municipalities that chose to use the devices in their communities.
The guidance includes plan development, criteria, and application submission.
Automated traffic enforcement safety devices include speed safety cameras and red light cameras.
“The CTDOT team worked incredibly hard over the last several months in partnership with community partners and elected officials in creating guidance for municipalities that has all the information and resources necessary to ensure automated traffic enforcement safety devices are used appropriately,” Garrett Eucalitto, CTDOT commissioner, said. “Automated traffic enforcement safety devices have been proven to significantly reduce crashes and serious injuries, and ultimately save lives…. By developing comprehensive guidance, we are ensuring our roads will become safer for everyone.”
Public Act 23-116 required CTDOT to develop the guidance. Its release means towns and cities are able to start the process of submitting applications to CTDOT.
The guidance was required to be consistent. The state’s goal is to install traffic enforcement safety devices in locations where they likely will improve traffic safety. The act does not mandate municipalities install these devices. Instead, they must opt-in with a vote by their legislative body.
