Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Bridges and Tunnels set a record for annual traffic volume in 2023 at more than 335 million vehicular crossings.
This is an increase of 1.3 percent from 2019 when the previous record was set at 330.7 million crossings.
“I’d like to commend the workforce for promoting safe road operations throughout this record year, through enforcement and infrastructure maintenance and improvements,” Catherine Sheridan, MTA Bridges and Tunnels president, said. “As a message to motorists traversing our facilities, E-ZPass is the least expensive, easiest way to pay your tolls. Customers can also download the increasingly popular Tolls NY app, which conveniently allows you manage your E-ZPass account.”
MTA Bridges and Tunnels implemented cashless tolling in 2017 and has since seen average daily traffic increase by 7 percent, collision rates significantly decrease, and customer travel time reduced.
MTA is North America’s largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in New York and Connecticut.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels operates and maintains seven bridges and two tunnels in New York City. It plans safety improvement projects focused on reducing congestion and improving road safety.
In 1937, the agency’s first full year of operation, there were 18.5 million crossings.
