The American Trucking Associations (ATA), a national trade association representing the U.S. trucking industry, recently testified before a U.S. Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee panel on the national truck-parking shortage.
Brenda Neville, Iowa Motor Truck Association president, spoke on behalf of the ATA.
“There is simply not enough truck-parking capacity along key freight corridors,” Neville said. “The lack of truck parking has a severe impact on the health and wellbeing of truck drivers and even broader safety implications for the motoring public. In every conversation I have with female truck drivers, truck parking is always the first thing they mention when asked what needs to be improved.”
Female drivers cite the parking shortage as a major barrier to more women joining and staying in the industry, Neville said.
The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, H.R. 2367, was introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL) in March. If enacted, the bipartisan bill would authorize $755 million between 2024-2026 for the Department of Transportation to provide competitive grants to build or improve public parking facilities for commercial motor vehicles. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee advanced the bill in May to the full House, where it remains under consideration.
