On Tuesday, mobility infrastructure management firm Iteris announced it had been awarded a three-year, $9.5 million contact with the U.S. Department of Transportation for its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) reference architecture program.
The contract, from the Federal Highway Administration Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO), covers Iteris’ role in developing, evolving and deploying support including functional, technology, data, security, engineering and other technical expertise to enhance the DOT’s ITS architecture. The enhancements from Iteris will help prepare state and local transportation infrastructure owner operators for advances in automation, connectivity and emerging technology, the company said.
“Since its initial release in 1996, the ITS architecture program has been a vital and constantly evolving reference for ITS and emerging technology projects,” said Dr. Moe Zarean, general manager, mobility operations services at Iteris. “Iteris is honored to provide expertise which supports the ITS JPO’s mission to improve the safety, mobility, equity, and sustainability of our nation’s transportation system.”
The Austin, Texas-based company will support the evolution of the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) content as it reflects the changes in ITS. The program supports statewide and regional ITS planning and deployment to encourage preparedness for emerging technology and interoperability through training and technical assistance, the company said.
For the past 30 years, Iteris has been involved in the U.S. ITS architecture, most recently expanding ARC-IT to support multimodal accessible travel, including updates that addressed accessible navigation, payment integration and vulnerable road user safety.
