Amtrak recently completed renovations on the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Railroad Station in Wilmington, Del.
Updates included improving station accessibility and adding two escalators and interior stairs. There are plans to conduct additional repair and improvement work on the station and adjacent rail beds in coming years.
The project aligns with other station upgrades on the Northeast Corridor.
The 115-year-old station was rededicated as the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station in 2011 after undergoing a major restoration. It was ranked the 20th busiest station on the Amtrak network during fiscal year 2023, serving more than 600,000 customers.
“The Wilmington Station is an important transportation hub on the Northeast Corridor and this $11.6 million project is a critical investment in the station,” Laura Mason, Amtrak executive vice president of capital delivery, said. “Amtrak is grateful for the Delaware federal delegation’s continued support in funding Department of Transportation grant programs, support of the IIJA and continued partnership.”
Amtrak has committed to providing complete accessibility at all stations by 2029. Since 2011, it has invested nearly $800 million in accessibility upgrades and improvement projects at 119 stations. An investment of $195 million will make 35 stations Americans with Disabilities Act compliant in fiscal year 2024.
