The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) recently advanced its Greater Hartford Mobility Study for creating a vibrant, equitable, and sustainable multimodal transportation network in the neighborhoods between Hartford and East Hartford.

Several early action projects would be implemented within the next five years while the four major program components would undergo National and Connecticut Environmental Policy Act reviews.

The four major program components are CityLink West, CityLink East, River Gateway, and Founders Gateway.

CityLink West aims to address safety, reduce the number of ramps in the Study Core, and improve connectivity.

CityLink East would mitigate highway congestion in downtown Hartford by relocating the I-84/I-91 interchange and building a new bridge to connect I-84 and Route 2 in East Hartford.

River Gateway would mitigate some of the impacts of I-91 by creating a boulevard and building a bridge connecting the Sheldon/Charter Oak neighborhood with a mid-rise neighborhood in East Hartford.

Founders Gateway would consolidate the I-84/Route 2 interchange ramps in East Hartford to open acres of land to potential development.

The goal of the study is to increase transportation options, accessibility, reliability, and safety; improve the movement of people and goods; minimize environmental impacts; and accommodate future needs and emerging technologies.

The final report will be released next month.
