The $111.7 million Bayfront Parkway Central Corridor Improvement Construction Project aims to strengthen the connection between Downtown Erie, Pa., and the Lake Erie Waterfront by improving accessibility and safety within the Bayfront Parkway central corridor.
The project will build a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge at the Holland Street intersection, address motorized traffic and utility needs, and upgrade the pedestrian and bicycle amenities.
“The Bayfront Parkway is a major corridor for tourists and Erie locals alike – it is the gateway to both this beautiful bayfront and Erie’s downtown, which is currently undergoing an incredible economic revitalization,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said during an event to announce the multi-year project’s commencement. “That’s why the commonwealth is investing more than $37 million to revitalize the Bayfront Parkway.”
Construction will be done in six phases over approximately four years. Work will begin at the Sassafras Street Extension intersection and will conclude with the construction of the pedestrian bridge at Holland Street.
State and federal funds, including nearly $28 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will pay for the project.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation identified several supplemental projects during the design process that were completed in preparation for the Bayfront Parkway project.
The Erie-Western PA Port Authority also completed work.
