The runway of Nezperce Airport in north-central Idaho was widened in August from 30 feet to 50 feet.
The project was made possible through a $357,340 Leading Idaho grant.
Work also included an overlay. The new runway surface is expected to last 20 years, and the widening will improve safety for aircraft operating out of the airport. It also provides future aviation growth opportunities.
Three agricultural crop spraying businesses currently operate out of the airport.
“This project is a great example of how the aviation community is working together to provide the safest aviation system possible,” Idaho Division of Aeronautics’ Jennifer Schildgen said.
A width deficiency at the airport was identified in a 2003 planning study.
“Gov. (Brad) Little’s Leading Idaho initiative has provided the Division of Aeronautics the opportunity to provide funding for worthy aviation projects that may have never been accomplished due to funding shortfalls,” Schildgen said.
The 2021 Idaho Legislature dedicated $126 million in one-time funds from Idaho’s budget surplus to transportation projects statewide for the Leading Idaho initiative. Funding will be used to expedite projects that replace bridges, restore pavement, and improve mobility.
Funds were split 60/40 between the Idaho Transportation Department and local jurisdictions. The department’s portion of the funds paid for the project.
