Florida-based Crown Holdings, a supplier of rigid packaging products, recently announced it has purchased Helvetia Packaging AG, a beverage can and end manufacturing facility, in Saarlouis, Germany, for an undisclosed amount.

“We look forward to welcoming the employees of the Saarlouis facility to the Crown family as we extend our European beverage can network to Germany to better serve the needs of local and regional customers,” Timothy J. Donahue, Crown Holdings chairman, president and CEO, said.

The purchase will expand Crown’s European beverage can platform to Germany.

In recent years, there has been an increased preference for beverage cans to serve both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink segments. This is because aluminum can be recycled infinitely and has sustainability benefits.

The transaction is subject to approval by German anti-trust authorities but is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The plant will remain operational during the review period. It has an annual can capacity of approximately 1 billion units.

Once the deal closes, Crown will assume the existing Helvetia customer base and accompanying contracts.

Through its subsidiaries, Crown Holdings serves consumer marketing companies worldwide. It provides transit and protective packaging products, and equipment and services to a broad range of end markets.
