The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently announced that its three major airports reached a record for travelers during the first half of the year, surpassing the previous year-to-date record set in 2019.

John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International airports surpassed 2019 record by nearly 1 million.

More than 69 million passengers used the three airports. In June, despite inclement weather that negatively affected air demand, the three airports served nearly 12.4 million passengers. This was a 4 percent decrease from May 2023.

In addition, the port authority announced that its port was the second-busiest container port in the United States for June and for year to date.

During June, the port moved 624,440 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). For 2023, it has so far moved 3.7 TEUs, 2.2 percent more cargo compared to prepandemic 2019.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates and maintains a network of airports, bridges, tunnels, bus terminals, a commuter rail line, a seaport, and the World Trade Center campus.

The authority’s $37 billion 10-year capital plan includes transforming of the region’s three major airports, renovating the 90-year-old George Washington Bridge, and many other new and upgraded assets throughout the agency’s network.
