In 2022, Trucks moved 11.46 billion tons of freight generating $940.8 billion, according to American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) American Trucking Trends 2023.
This year’s report includes an overview of ATA’s driver compensation data, new chapters on the broader macroeconomy with a focus on drivers of freight volumes, and annual data on household goods movers.
“While 2022 was a challenging year for trucking in many respects, the industry still posted growth in revenue, tonnage, employment and several other measures,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said. “In addition, by share of freight revenue and tonnage, trucking remained by far the dominant mode of transportation in the country.”
Other trends in the report include:
Trucks moved 61.9 percent of the value of trade between the United State and Canada and 83.5 percent of trade with Mexico.
Trucks collected 80.7 percent, $940.8 billion in goods, of the domestic freight bill.
A total of 99.7 percent of fleets operate 100 or fewer trucks, and 95.8 percent operate 10 or fewer.
The industry employed 3.54 million truck drivers while 8.4 million people were employed in industry-related jobs, up 405,000 from 2021.
Of the drivers, 8.1 percent were women, 4 percent were Asian, 18.3 percent were black, and 23.3 percent were Hispanic or Latino.
