The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) announced in May it would be offering small-scale Highway Safety Improvement Program grants.

The Small Scale Local Safety Grant Program will provide grants as small as $5,000 and up to $35,000 for construction ready projects. The projects should be simple improvement projects that will increase safety on the local roadway system, and can include a combination of curve warning signs; edge line markings on paved roads; breakaway devices; intersection signing and marking; and removal of objects to widen clear zones.

The grants do not require a local match and the AOT said it will fund 100 percent of the grants for construction. Design, permitting and administration are not eligible for reimbursement under the grants, and the funding may not be used to provide a match for federally-funded projects or to add on to an already federally funded project.

Applications are due on June 16 by 4 p.m. and must be submitted electronically to aot.hsipengineer@vermont.gov. The grants will be awarded by July 10, 2023, and will be provided on a reimbursement basis only, the AOT said. Applications must also include a letter of support from the governing body of the applicant, and a commitment to maintain the project in the future.
