Port Authority of New York, New Jersey surpasses pre-pandemic levels

During the first quarter of 2023, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recorded numbers that surpassed pre-COVID-19 pandemic figures.

The Port Authority’s commercial airports, John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia, surpassed the previous record of 32 million passengers. This also is nearly 1 million passengers more than the first quarter of 2019. Two of the airports also surpassed 2019 numbers. Newark had 11.1 million passengers, and LaGuardia had 7.2 million.

Bridges and tunnels had the highest first-quarter volumes since 2008, up nearly 3 percent from 2019.

The six crossings handled 28.7 million eastbound vehicles, nearly 3 percent higher than in 2019.

Truck traffic totaled 2 million, a 15.2 percent increase compared to 2019.

Automobile volume totaled 26.1 million, up 2.9 percent compared to 2019.

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved nearly 1.8 million 20-foot equivalent units, similar to the same period in 2019.

PATH ridership reached 11.3 million passengers, 59 percent of pre-COVID volumes. March was the first time ridership surpassed 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates and maintains three major airports, the busiest seaport on the East Coast, a commuter rail line, and bridges, tunnels, and bus terminals.
