Michigan awarded more than $7M in federal mobility grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded Michigan more than $7 million in Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grants for use on four projects that impact transportation safety, efficiency, and international commerce.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created the SMART grant program. It will provide $100 million annually for fiscal years 2022-2026.

The city of Detroit received $2 million for Detroit Mobility Optimization through Data for Equity and Safety. The project will create smart intersections using the existing traffic camera network and deploying artificial intelligence software. The project’s goal is to predict and prevent traffic accidents.

The Road Commission for Oakland County received $2 million for Leading in Sustainable Safety with V2X technology. The project will create a framework for deploying cellular vehicle-to-everything)technology in a sustainable manner to enhance safety and communication between vehicles and infrastructure.

The Michigan Department of Transportation received $1.8 million for the Blue Water Bridge International Smart Freight Corridor. The initiative will implement a concept for a smart corridor for truckborne goods movement across the Blue Water Bridge.

The department also received $1.3 million for the Advancing Rural Mobility: Michigan Public Transit Open Data Standards Program. The project will make real-time public transit information accessible in rural Michigan.
