The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently announced the availability of nearly $1.7 billion through two grant programs to support modernizing aging transit fleets.
Approximately $1.22 billion will be available through the Low or No Emission Program. The program helps transit agencies buy or lease U.S.-built zero-emission and low-emission transit buses, charging equipment, and supporting facilities. Five percent of each grant must be used for workforce development and training.
Approximately $469 million will be available through the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program. The program supports purchasing or rehabilitating buses, vans, and related equipment and building bus facilities.
Projects that advance environmental justice under the Biden Administration’s Justice40 Initiative will be given priority, as will projects that create a broader shift sector-wide toward low- and zero-emission options.
“Buying new buses, including many vehicles that use new technology to fight climate change, will promote cleaner, faster, and safer rides as we move toward a better future,” FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez said. “Thanks to the strong commitment of this Administration to not leave anyone behind, we will be able to connect more people in their communities and improve the reliability of transit service.”
The application deadline is April 13.
