The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) recently released the 2023 edition of its three-year Work Plan.

The plan includes $3.94 billion in 2,599 capital projects and programs, maintenance and operations activities, planning initiatives, and administrative functions for calendar years 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The plan includes $116 million for 2,073 miles of light capital paving, $190 million for 264 highway safety and spot improvements, $475 million for 271 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation, $575 million for 1,178 miles of preservation paving, and $706 million for 302 bridge projects.

A $42.5 million project to replace approximately 75 miles of rail on CSX’s Waterville-Mattawamkeag Line and make track improvements to allow heavier freight cars and increased speeds.

A $35 million project to build a hybrid electric vessel for the Maine State Ferry Service to service Lincolnville and Islesboro.

An $11.1 million investment in pedestrian safety improvements in 12 Heads Up! focused communities that have experienced a disproportionate number of pedestrian crashes.

A total of $5 million in rural worker/workforce transportation funding opportunities for projects that connect workers to employment opportunities.

Approximately 11 percent of the plan’s items rely on Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant programs or Congressionally Directed Spending awards.
