A new report from the Iowa Department of Transportation shows that the aviation industry in Iowa not only provides essential services but also is a driver of the state’s economy.
Aviation’s Impact on Iowa’s Economy reports that aviation generates $6.4 billion for the state’s economy, including $1.8 billion related to airport activity and $4.6 billion related to businesses that produce aircraft components and other aviation-related services.
“The aviation and aerospace industries provide important services and generate significant economic impact in Iowa,” says Iowa DOT Aviation Director Tim McClung. “However, the larger impact comes from the benefits users gain by having a strong aviation system that supports the movement of people and goods. A healthy and vibrant system is an important component to Iowa’s friendly business climate.”
According to the report, more than 4 million passengers a year use airline services in the state, while air cargo services transport more than 90,000 tons each year. The aviation industry in Iowa also provides flights to 49 states and 27 countries for business travel and provides 4,100 flights for medical patients each year. The report found that aviation education is offered through five higher education programs, and flight training is available at 47 airports across the state.
The IDOT said the information in the report is expected to assist local, state, and federal officials in their decision-making regarding operations and transportation investments, as well as educating the public on the importance of aviation to the state and its economy.
