The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was the busiest container port in the United States in September for the second consecutive month.
The port also saw its 26th consecutive month for record monthly cargo volume.
When compared to August, cargo activity at the seaport was flat, traffic at the bridges and tunnels was flat, PATH ridership increased by nearly 7 percent, and volume at the airports decreased by 13 percent.
Other September 2022 figures include:
The port handled 842,219 20-foot equivalent units, 35 percent more cargo compared to the volume handled before the COVID-19 pandemic. Cargo volume grew 34.8 percent compared to 2019.
The authority’s airports moved 10.9 million passengers, 95 percent of pre-COVID September volumes. Passenger volumes decreased in August following normal seasonal trends following the summer travel period.
Traffic at the authority’s four bridges and two tunnels is at 100 percent of pre-pandemic levels. There were 10.3 million eastbound vehicles. Traffic declined 1.9 percent from August, which is consistent with seasonality factors such as summer vacations and school schedules.
PATH’s total ridership was 58.4 percent of its September 2019 ridership with 4 million riders. Compared to August, ridership increased by 6.8 percent. This corresponds with an increase in workers commuting after Labor Day.
