The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) recently signed an agreement with Stadler, a supplier of mobility solutions to the railway vehicle sector, for the design and delivery of four zero emission hydrogen FLIRT trains. The trains will be deployed statewide.

The Stadler FLIRT is a single-deck multiple-unit train. It is available in fully electric, diesel, and multi-mode propulsion.

The agreement lists the stakeholders’ responsibilities and roles and will lead to a contract with the option to purchase up to 25 units.

The agencies selected Stadler because it is one of the few original equipment manufacturers that built zero-emission multiple unit trains powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. It is the only manufacturer in North America that designs and builds vehicles compliant with the Federal Railroad Administration AVT Crashworthiness Standards.

“It is great to be part of California’s move toward eco-friendly travel with another zero emission project in the state, and we look forward to continue our work with CalSTA and CalTrans to make this a reality,” Stadler US CEO Martin Ritter said.

Headquartered in Switzerland, Stadler’s products include main-line engines, cog railway vehicles, underground railways, regional and suburban railways, intercity trains, high-speed trains, light railways, and trams.
