Fleet companies are investing in electric- and hydrogen-powered vehicles and plan to do so over the next few years, according to a new survey released by TravelCenters of America (TA).
The survey is part of a whitepaper eTA, TA’s sustainability business unit, released called Sustainable Fuels in Trucking: The Greening of America’s Trucking Industry.
Additionally, one in five companies have some electric vehicles in their fleets, 5 percent of fleets have hydrogen vehicles, and 9 percent of fleets have compressed natural gas vehicles.
By 2030, approximately half of survey respondents expect to have electric vehicles in their fleet, and nearly 25 percent of fleets expect to have hydrogen vehicles. Very few respondents said compressed natural gas vehicles will make up a larger percentage of their fleets or were interested in vehicles powered by renewable natural gas or liquified natural gas.
The companies expect electric trucks will make up 11 percent to 25 percent of their fleets by 2030.
The Multi-State Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicle Action Plan aims for 100 percent electrification of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sales by 2050.
Nearly half of the U.S. population and 36 percent of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are represented under the plan.
