Iowa Transportation Commission approves $1.5M in transit funding

The Iowa Transportation Commission approved $1.5 million in funding for four public transit projects statewide through the Public Transit Infrastructure Grant Program.

The North Iowa Area Council of Governments in Mason City was approved for $200,000 for the replacement of insulation and a vapor barrier for transit facility storage and maintenance area.

The Siouxland Regional Transit System in Sioux City was approved for $238,434 for an automated bus wash.

The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission in Mount Pleasant was approved for $480,000 for Phase One of a building renovation.

CyRide in Ames was approved for $581,566 for the rehabilitation of the shop area in the maintenance facility.

“The Public Transit Infrastructure Grant is an impactful source of funding for public transit systems,” Rebecca Law, Iowa Department of Transportation Transit Programs Administrator for the Modal Transportation Bureau Public Transit Section, said. “This program enables transit systems to construct and maintain facilities that are critical to the operation of their system and maintenance of the vehicles. This year, we received seven project applications requesting $5,653,600.”

To qualify for funding, a transit system must secure local funding for a minimum of 20 percent of the project costs. It can apply to have up to 80 percent of a project funded.
