Pittsburgh Port Authority rebrands as Pittsburgh Regional Transit

Following a multi-year process, the Pittsburgh Port Authority recently rebranded itself Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT).

The name change reflects changes in the region since the port authority was founded in 1964.

“A clear, concise name for Pittsburgh’s regional transit system was long overdue. It was time to put the old name and identity in the rear-view mirror and reinvent transit for Pittsburgh’s future,” PRT said. “The name PRT and its brand position are much more closely aligned with the region’s current momentum and direction.”

The change process included an in-depth audit of the world’s most forward-thinking transit agencies as well as research and collaboration with riders.

Riders will not see a disruption of services or a fare increase.

The PRT brand will be added to the agency’s website, signage brochures, and schedules over the next year, and vehicles over the next few years.

PRT has a fleet of two inclined planes, 80 light rail vehicles and more than 700 buses. Its infrastructure includes more than 80 bridges, 54 park and ride locations, a 26.2-mile light rail system, the Wabash Tunnel, the Monongahela Incline, and the Duquesne Incline.

In 2019, the agency provided more than 62 million rides.
