Amtrak and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) recently completed a project that improves accessibility and safety at the Amtrak stop in Ashland, Va.
The partners brought Amtrak Northeast Regional daily service to the station located in downtown Ashland.
Amtrak, VPRA, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the town of Ashland partnered for a series of improvements including the placement of two mobile lifts that will benefit passengers who use mobility devices and customers with wheeled luggage or strollers. They also partnered for the construction of two brick platforms and a canopy.
The platforms connect to sidewalks, crosswalks and a pedestrian grade crossing for customers to travel between trains and the station.
“The upgrades at the Ashland station make rail service more accessible and an even better option for those travelers with mobility issues,” DJ Stadtler, VPRA executive director, said. “Through the strong partnership between the town of Ashland, Amtrak, and VPRA, using the Ashland station is now safer and more convenient for all Amtrak passengers.”
Amtrak and Ashland worked together to redesign one block of N. Railroad Avenue. The design modified the vehicle traffic pattern, and made it safer for customers and pedestrians.
Amtrak has completed 162 ADA station-related projects as part of the ADA Stations Program.
