FTA makes available $13M in competitive transit grants

The Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Pilot Program for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning recently made available approximately $13 million in competitive grant funds.

TOD supports comprehensive or site-specific planning projects that enable mixed-use development near transit stations, engage the private sector, identify infrastructure needs, foster multimodal connectivity and accessibility, improve economic development and ridership, and improve transit access for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

This round of grants will support comprehensive or site-specific planning efforts that combat climate change, promote equitable delivery of benefits to underserved communities, and
support President Joe Biden’s call to lower costs for American families.

The FTA will give special consideration to applications that advance environmental justice, improve air quality, and promote housing affordability.

“The program encourages communities to think innovatively about the intersection between land use and mobility,” FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez said. “It also challenges communities to think about road safety, equity, climate change, and affordable housing as intertwined with transit investments.”

Applicants must be existing FTA recipients either as a project sponsor of an eligible transit project or as an entity with the land-use planning authority in the project corridor.

Transit project sponsors and land-use planning authorities must partner to conduct planning work.

Applications are due July 25.
