The Transportation Department of Charlotte, N.C., recently released the first draft of its Strategic Mobility Plan.
“The Strategic Mobility Plan is a critical step in implementing the vision of Charlotte’s 2040 Plan to offer everyone in our city safe and equitable mobility choices,” said Liz Babson, director of the City of Charlotte’s Department of Transportation.
The plan will integrate existing transportation plans and policies into one single plan, establish new goals for mobility, modernize current transportation, and help align the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan policy map and the Unified Development Ordinance.
The document includes six sections: the city’s mobility vision, the community’s current mobility needs, residents’ desires and concerns for mobility’s future, a policy framework, specific infrastructure strategies and investments needed to implement the mobility vision, and how progress will be measured.
According to the draft, more than 75 percent of Charlotte residents drive to work.
The city is seeking public feedback on the plan. Residents can email the Department of Transportation or comment on its website. Residents also can comment after virtual engagement sessions on Thursday and May 31.
A public hearing will be held during the city council’s business meeting on June 13. The city council is expected to consider the plan for adoption on June 27.
