The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) recently awarded a construction contract for the final phase of the Berlin G. Myers Parkway project.
The parkway will connect Dorchester County with US 17A and Bacons Bridge Road. The final phase spans 3.9 miles and includes a new four-lane roadway and a shared-use multipurpose pathway along the Sawmill Branch Trail.
“The Berlin G. Myers Parkway will serve as a bypass that will take the pressure off our local roads,” Stephen Grant, Dorchester County Transportation Authority (DCTA) chairman, said. “Main Street is at its limits and cannot be extended. In addition, congestion will be relieved around Summerville High School. There are many partners to thank for persevering for many years to get this project to construction. Especially the people of Summerville and Dorchester County who placed their trust in us to enhance the quality of life for our citizens.”
The project took more than 18 years of planning, permitting and engineering work, and required extensive permitting and interagency coordination to fulfill regulatory requirements and meet local needs.
It cost approximately $137 million. SCDOT/Charleston Area Transportation Study funds contributed $72 million, DCTA contributed $35 million, and State Infrastructure Bank funds contributed $30 million.
