The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently awarded $47.8 million to 56 projects in 28 counties through the Multimodal Transportation Fund. Several projects address bridges and roadways needing repair or replacement.

The fund provides grants to projects that encourage economic development and ensure a safe and reliable transportation system. Grants can be used to develop, rehabilitate, and enhance transportation assets.

PennDOT evaluated the applications for criteria such as energy efficiency, job creation, operational sustainability, regional economic conditions, safety benefits, and technical and financial feasibility.

“Whether we’re making roadways more accessible to all modes of travel or creating new connections for businesses investing in our communities, transportation is integral to our quality of life,” PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian said. “These projects will bring long-lasting improvements across the state.”

Awards ranged from $53,000 to $3 million.

Two of the largest awards include the City of Philadelphia Streets Department, which received $3 million to build two roundabouts on Parkside Avenue at North 53rd Street and Bryn Mawr Avenue. The project will improve safety and enhance multimodal connectivity to the adjacent park.

Also, Exel in Lebanon County received $3 million to build a roundabout at the intersection of Route 934 and Clear Spring Road in North Annville Township.
