The Washington State Department of Transportation recently released its Multimodal Mobility Dashboard.
The dashboard shows annual performance data and five-year trends for numerous travel modes on state-owned facilities. Currently, the dashboard shows data through 2020. Data from 2021 is scheduled to be released in the fall.
The dashboard also highlights monthly travel changes experienced during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic compared to 2019 and 2018.
In March 2020, the governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” emergency order encouraged safety while limiting non-essential business and travel. Teleworking increased, and physical distancing affected carpools and mass transit. All modes of transportation saw significant changes to commute times, delays, congestion, and vehicle throughput.
By late June 2020, travel started to increase but remained lower than in 2019.
Additionally, a total of 30 billion vehicle miles were traveled on state highways, 15 percent less than the miles traveled in 2019.
Amtrak Cascades trains carried 1,400 bicycles, 80 percent fewer bicycles than those transported in 2019.
Washington State Ferries carried 14 million riders, 41 percent fewer than in 2019.
Washington public transportation users took 110 million trips, 54 percent fewer than in 2019.
