The U.S. Department of Transportation recently recommended $4.45 billion to advance seven new rail and bus rapid transit projects and continue funding for eight projects with existing construction grants in fiscal year 2023.

“Public transit creates jobs, reduces traffic and pollution, and lowers the cost of living for people in the community,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “With this funding made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we can help support transit projects all over the country that will improve the lives of millions of Americans.”

All projects require a local match. They competed for funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants Program and Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program.

The seven transit projects that would receive first-time funding are located in California, New York, New York/New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

They include $400 million for the Second Avenue Subway phase two heavy rail project in New York. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority proposal would extend heavy rail subway service 1.5 miles along the East Side of Manhattan and include three new stations and signal and communications systems.

The eight projects with existing construction grant agreements are located in California, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Washington.
