The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin construction on April 3 on phase two of the I-24 SMART Corridor project.
On the Murfreesboro-Rutherford County segments of l-24, traffic volumes have increased by more than 60 percent since 2005. The I-24 SMART Corridor project will integrate freeway and arterial roadway elements to manage traffic.
The changes also are expected to improve safety and enhance travel time reliability.
Work will include the installation of 67 overhead gantries over the eastbound and westbound lanes of the interstate between mile markers 53 and 70. The gantries will be part of the Intelligent Transportation Systems and prompt overnight lane closures along the corridor from Nashville to Murfreesboro.
The gantries are expected to become operational in November, with the intelligent devices installed from July through September.
Eastbound and westbound lanes will experience double right-lane closures and single left-lane closures while equipment is set up.
Work will stretch from mile markers 55 to 60 and is expected to be completed during the spring of 2023. Work will be conducted between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Drivers can assess the work schedules and locations in the weekly Middle Tennessee Lane Closure Report found on the department’s website.
Phase one was completed in December 2021.
