The U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently awarded Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) two Buses and Bus Facilities Program grants totaling $13.6 million to modernize rural and small urban public transit bus fleets and facilities.
“Michigan continues to lead the way with clean, efficient public transportation,” State Transportation Director Paul C. Ajegba said. “Local public transit systems provide vital transportation to Michigan’s diverse populations, taking them to work, medical appointments, and grocery shopping. Riders throughout the state can look forward to modern buses that will enhance services and improve air quality.”
The first grant, totaling $6.2 million, will be allocated to 13 public transit agencies to replace aging vehicles and expand fleets. Statewide, A 41 replacement vehicles, some zero-emission electric buses, will go to rural and small urban transit agencies. This is expected to provide cleaner air, improve service reliability, and enhance safety.
The second grant, totaling $7.4 million, will be given to the Alma Dial-A-Ride, the Benzie Transportation Authority, the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority, and the Thunder Bay Transportation Authority. The agencies will use the funds to replace, expand, or remodel rural transit bus facilities, which is expected to improve service reliability and enhance transit safety and access.
