The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $21.3 million Kingston Road Bridge project in Richmond, which was completed five months ahead of schedule and on budget.
The bridge carries 51,300 vehicles daily on I-95 over Route 138 at the Exit 3 interchange.
Work included consolidating the two exits in each direction into a single exit, removing two sharply curved highway off-ramps, installing new traffic signals with pedestrian crossing features, removing a guardrail barrier along Route 138, adding1,500 feet of new sidewalk, and removing ramps spaced too closely together.
“The Kingston Road Bridge project is a thoughtful redesign of our roadways,” Gov. Dan McKee said. “Reconfiguring this interchange will make it much safer for the thousands of drivers who travel over this bridge, as well as pedestrians and passengers who use the nearby RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority) stop.”
There were 148 crashes at the interchange between 2014 and 2019, including one fatality and 28 injuries.
