Port Authority of New York and New Jersey facilities recovering from pandemic

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s airports and PATH system passenger volumes are slowly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, but November figures remain below 2019 levels.

When compared to November 2019 levels, PATH’s total ridership was approximately 50 percent lower, and vehicular traffic at bridges and tunnels was 1 percent lower.

An estimated 8.3 million passengers moved through the port authority’s airports, down 23 percent, although airport passenger volumes increased 9 percent from October.

A total of 10.04 million eastbound vehicles traveled the port authority’s four bridges and two tunnels. When comparing average daily traffic, November 2021 volumes were similar to October.

Automobile traffic dropped 0.5 percent, but truck traffic increased 3.6 percent.

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 2.8 percent more cargo than the previous record for November set in 2020. This figure was nearly 27 percent higher than in November 2019.

A total of 759,390 20-foot equivalent units were moved, the 16th consecutive month of record-setting cargo activity.

Cargo activity was down by 4.7 percent compared to October 2021.
