A new video from the Michigan Department of Transportation highlights some of the most impactful improvements made during its record-breaking investment into infrastructure in 2021.
The Rebuilding Michigan bond program injected more than $1 billion into Michigan roads and bridges this year, focusing on the state’s most traveled highways and bridges, as well as important tourist routes.
“When you think about the incredible work that MDOT is doing, in the midst of a pandemic, utilizing the bonding proceeds from the work that we did last year, this is the work that we are getting done,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “This increases quality of life. It increases return on investment. It’s why addressing infrastructure right now, in this way, is so important.”
The funding supported more than 100,000 jobs across the state and has paved the way for more economic development and jobs in the years to come.
Highlighted in the video are some of the major projects throughout the year and their impact on local communities. Highlighted projects included work on two roundabouts on M-37 near Chums Corner that are expected to help with traffic flow during the busy tourist season in the summer.
“I appreciate MDOT making that section a priority. I appreciate the investment in our community, not only making it safer for the people that live here but the people that travel through our community,” said Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine.
Other projects included a temporary bridge installed on the M-30 to replace one that was washed out due to flooding in 2020 and emergency repairs to several other bridges, including a railroad bridge over US-23 near Milan that had been deemed unsafe after a routine inspection.
