The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) approved a new transportation plan that seeks to aid pedestrians, motorists and cyclists in navigating the region.
The 2021 Regional Plan, which is slated to serve as the San Diego transportation sector’s regional blueprint through 2050, was developed via a data-driven approach while addressing factors such as climate change.
“This is a monumental day for the San Diego region,” SANDAG CEO Hasan Ikhrata said. “The 2021 Regional Plan creates real transportation options that address today’s challenges and build a foundation for tomorrow, ensuring our region is ready for generations to come. We appreciate the community’s support and look forward to partnering with you to bring this transformational plan to life.”
Efforts to advance projects include, per officials, establishing the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry and Smart Border Management System; relocation of the LOSSAN rail corridor off the bluffs; progressive action regarding the Central Mobility Hub as a means of providing direct transit connections to the San Diego International Airport; developing the Blue Line Express; and formulating a Digital Equity Action Plan.
The 2021 Regional Plan stems from information gathered regarding where people live and work; how they navigate the region; the manner in which existing transportation infrastructure works well or needs enhancing; and desired methods of supporting future growth.
