Virginia will receive more than $8 billion in federal infrastructure funding.

More than $1.2 billion will be devoted to transit and highway systems, and more than $7.7 billion will be devoted to highways, bridges, and electric vehicle charging stations. The state’s airports will receive $400 million.

Funding will be received over the next five years and is the result of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Transit systems statewide will share funding. The largest chunk of funds, $176.6 million, will be given to Virginia Beach. In addition, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. will share $2.7 billion for the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Highway, bridge, and electric vehicle charging station funding will be divided among 12 programs. These include $51.9 million for Metropolitan Planning, $1.9 billion for Surface Transportation Block Grants, $24.8 million for the Railway-Highway Crossings Program, and $3.8 billion for the National Highway Performance Program.

“The bipartisan infrastructure law is delivering real, hard-fought wins to communities across the Commonwealth and the nation to maintain our roads, bridges, and rail,” U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mark R. Warner (D-VA) said in a joint statement.

Transit systems will have the opportunity to compete for approximately $34.7 billion in nationwide discretionary grant programs.
